SIM lock:

A SIM-LOCK, network-lock, Carrier-Lock, imei lock or (master) subsidy lock is really a technical limitation built into GSM and CDMA mobile phones by manufacturers to be used by carriers to restrict the use of these phones to specific countries and/or networks. This is not like a phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) which doesn't impose any SIM limitations.

The vast majority of cellphones can be unlocked to operate with any GSM mobile phone network provider, though the phone may still show the original branding and may not support features of the new carrier. In addition to the locking, cell phones can also have firmware attached to them which is specific to the mobile phone network provider. This firmware is installed by the service provider which is separate from the locking mechanism. The majority of cell phones can be unbranded by re-flashing another type of firmware version, a procedure suited to advanced users only.

Unlocking Technology:

A handset can be unlocked simply by entering a code supplied by the service operator. Alternative mechanisms consist of software running on the device or a computer or laptop attached to the handset, hardware devices that connect to the phone or over-the-air by the provider. Usually the unlock procedure is permanent. The code required to remove all locks from a cellphone is called the master code, network code key, or multi-lock code. Generally if the device is network locked it will typically display one of the following messages: SIM network PIN blocked, Enter lock PIN.

Economics:

Quite often a SIM-locked phone is marketed at a significantly lower cost than an unlocked one due to the fact the supplier expects income thru its service. SIM locks are currently employed on lower priced (pay-as-you-go) mobile phones, though special discounts on more costly handsets require a subscription that offers guaranteed income. Unlocked phones have a better market value.

Unlocking Services:

A certain amount of businesses provide a permanent mobile phone unlocking service . This service requires people whom need to unlock a phone to supply their IMEI number to a unlocking company and quite often they will also request the country and service provider the device is locked to, either sent by email or submitted on their website. The company will then provide (for a fee) a unlock code for the mobile phone.
