It's been apparent to anyone who's been paying to the news that Minecraft has been seeing a resurgence lately and now we can quantify that to some extent.

Microsoft announced to Business Insider this week that Minecraft has risen to 112 million monthly players, a 20 million increase from the figures for October. It's more than a decade old, but is still relevant.

There are many reasons for the rise in popularity of Minecraft. A new update was made available around the 10th anniversary of the game and added lots of new content. 100 million subscribers YouTuber PewDiePie is acknowledged for bringing back the game in the "influencer" scene and his channel has been solely dedicated to Minecraft over the past few months. Fortnite's declining popularity is evident as players move on from the massive hit to other games, such as Minecraft.

Minecraft's rise is even greater when you consider that it is not free on most platforms, such as Fortnite. Some may attribute Microsoft putting it in the Xbox Game Pass as a move that has increased its player base even more. Wikimedia

Fortnite appears to be aware that Minecraft is attracting fewer players, which is why we've seen the emergence of Creative Mode in that game and the continued dedication to expanding it. Minecraft is still the original and will continue to increase its popularity with future releases like Minecraft Dungeons. This is a combination of the original with Diablo-like looting, and Dungeons.

Overall the message I hear constantly from Minecraft players is that it's an enjoyable game to revisit after a break, and in this case I believe there's a kind of a snowball effect that so many players returned to it together it was as if old friends could all rejoin the game all at once and have the same enjoyment playing as they did 3 to 8 years ago.

Microsoft's $2.5 billion acquisition of Minecraft seemed odd at the time, but they now have one of the most played games in the world. Be Yourself; Everyone Else Is Already Taken I'm willing to wager that 112 million monthly users is more than Fortnite currently has and, possibly, only competing with mobile games on this level. It's truly amazing.

Expect Minecraft to live on forever. It will be relevant in future releases such as Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Earth and the AR game that will be aimed at Pokemon GO in the next.
