Over ten years since the release of Minecraft, a rare early version of Minecraft was thought to have disappeared. Minecraft alpha 1.1.1 was released for the original Java Edition in September 2010 and was only accessible for a little over three hours, and now it's been discovered by gaming historians.

There have been a variety of versions of Minecraft over the years and fans have meticulously preserved and archived the majority of them for reasons of preservation. One version called Alpha 1.1.1, also known as Seecret Sunday, was believed to be lost. While it introduced sneaking and fishing rods to Minecraft however, it was found to have a game-breaking glitch that would turn the screen completely gray, and was replaced within a couple of hours by version 1.1.2.

The whole story of its rediscovery was told over Twitter by user @lunasorcery (via Kotaku), who found the lost alpha. As Luna explains, Alpha 1.1.1 became a viral phenomenon or even a holy grail in the Minecraft archiving Discord Omniarchive and nobody of them expected to discover it.

Someone stumbled across one of Luna's old tweets, and inquired about it, and she was able to find an old backup of minecraft.jar dating the same day as Alpha 1.1.1's release - September 18 October, 2010. Luna checked the file and confirmed that it was indeed Alpha 1.1.1 and then posted on Omniarchive - which blew up.

So I made a post on the Omniarchive server, and it's an understatement to say that a few people noticed.

The reactions are enough to make you realize how massive this discovery is. I feel like I'm shaking. wow servers
