SIM lock:

A SIM-LOCK, Network-Lock, carrier-lock, IMEI-Lock or (Master) SUBSIDY lock serves as a technical limitation built into CDMA and GSM mobile devices by manufacturers for use by service providers to limit the usage of these phones to particular locations and/or networks. This is not like a mobile phone (retrospectively called SIM-free or unlocked) that does not enforce any SIM restrictions. In the event the cell phones weren't locked, users may well sign a contract with one particular supplier, get the marked down phone, then quit paying the monthly bill (thus breaking the contract) and begin using the cell phone on another mobile phone network or even sell the device for a profit. SIM locking reduces this by prohibiting a change of mobile phone network (using a new SIM).

Unlocking Technology:

Usually, a locked handset will show a message if a restricted SIM is used, requesting the unlock code. On recent phone models running Android os software, the mobile phone should display a message saying “SIM network unlock PIN” or “Enter Network Lock Control Key” if it is network locked. Windows phones will show the message, “This SIM card can only be used on specific networks. Contact your customer service center for the unlock code”. Other handsets might show a variety of messages that include "Enter special code" or "Enter unlocking code," or in some circumstances the handset will simply present a message saying that it's locked. As soon as a valid code is entered, the mobile phone displays "Network unlocked” or “Network unlock successful”.

Economics:

The key reason to unlock a phone is usually to be able to utilize it with another SIM card. Consumers may wish to carry on using their cellphone but with a new service provider or when traveling overseas they may need to connect to a foreign network with a prepaid subscription.

Unlocking Services:

Lots of businesses provide a carrier cell phone unlocking service . This service needs all those that would like to unlock a device to give their IMEI number to a service supplier and often they will also request the country and service provider the mobile phone handset is locked to, often sent via email or submitted on their website. The supplier then will provide (once you have paid) an unlock code for the mobile phone. For some manufacturers including Nokia and Samsung various services additionally supply unique remote-unlocking software with guidance, when a cable connection is required to remove the SIM lock at home. Such vendors may well email the unlocking code or software which can remotely unlock the device. The cost for unlocking a phone will differ based on the mobile phone network it's locked to and the smartphone model itself, as every unlock code is unique to each specific device.
