Neve Paritzki Jerusalems first cycling tunnel is opened in Israel

The Kerem Tunnel is a great location to go on a hike or ride.

In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem's capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban, and the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated in a ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.



"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city due to its glorious past. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures the modern tourist industry is incorporated into the Jerusalem city. "The launch of the tunnel project is another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as an ideal tourist destination for all kinds of tourists from Israel and around the globe."

Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.

Road construction, installation and testing of safety and electrical systems are just a few of the ongoing efforts to make the tunnel safer for all year.

Kerem Tunnel Kerem Tunnel allows for access to unique recreation areas, for instance Ein Kerem, a neighborhood that includes a biblical aquarium and zoo, and historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh and Ein Laban.
