Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an uncomplicated game that comes with it) has a major new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and it's worth a second go.

As we covered before during the Release Candidate stage one of the major advantages for users of this release is vastly easier mods, both small packs and entire games. Minetest was previously a way for players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However it now downloads all dependencies mods need which makes it much simpler to locate what you require and load it into the game. Games It's no required to download just one mod and then look for all the bits it requires.

The built-in base game "Minetest Game" was also given some improvements. While quite bare-bones by itself, it serves as a nice base to show off the engine and to extend with mods. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now comes with crafting guides, five additional wood types, ambient sounds for lava as well as active furnaces, new translations and numerous bug fixes. So it continues the gradual and steady progress into something bigger out of the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing when pointing at objects, bindable mouse buttons, name tags for players now have a semi-transparent background there's a caverns option for the flat map generation, the "place" and "fig" keys are now configurable and modding enhancements are plentiful and numerous bugs, like the player not being able to access inventory of other players.

It's great to see this free and open source game engine and game running so well. Going by the official server list, looks like a large number of people play a variety of games using Minetest and there are hundreds of players online when this article is published. Wow!
