It doesn’t matter what you think of me or how hard you hug me when I’m holding my knees to my chest because you’re not me, and I’m not you, and that means we’ll never really understand each other. The things I hold sacred, the moments that made me mean nothing to you, because a kitchen sink to you is not a kitchen sink to me.</p><br /><br /><p>There’s a dress I wore on a horrible night two years ago that I haven’t worn since, because I cried for two hours straight while wearing it, and even though it didn’t fit well, I couldn’t take it off because I could barely breathe. Then my sister opens my closet a few months later, pulls it out, and says, “This is cute. I haven’t seen you wear it in a while.”</p><br /><br /><p>Go away. Go away. Go away. In my freshman year of high school, I would go to all kinds of parties and sleepovers, and I’d lock myself in the bathroom to gasp and cry at every single one. But the thing is, once I wiped my eyes, it was almost impossible to tell I’d been crying and I never once asked my friend to come with me, or my parents to pick me up. Leave me alone. Leave me alone. I’d sit on the cold floor and think about how little I liked myself and how overwhelmed all those people made me feel, and I was utterly convinced of my loneliness.</p><br /><br /><p>Leave me alone leave me alone leave me alone leave me alone. You say it so many times it becomes strange on your lips. You lose track of how many times you say it, think it, breathe it, so naturally you lose track of when you stopped meaning it. Did you ever mean it? Some part of me still wants to say it, still wants to go back to those cold tile bathroom floors and that dress that was too tight. But that part is wrong. I was wrong. Nobody thinks what I think, but that doesn’t mean nobody else exists, or that pointlessness has to win the day.</p><br /><br /><p>It’s true that a kitchen sink to you is not a kitchen sink to me, but it’s also true that thousands of people can sing those words, each voice cracking as they realize the weight of the moment and the emotion that surrounds them. A song is a meeting place. Leave me alone and go away and empathy might be on the brink of extinction, sure, but also a song that takes on a collective meaning when every person fully commits to its message within the context of their lives. You’ll never have my horrible dress that didn’t fit well, but you probably have a dress of your own that you stopped wearing. An emotion as an intersection where we’ll meet and go away go away go away, together.</p><br /><br /><p>I’m alone in my head. Sometimes it’s awfully big and noisy and busy in there, and sometimes it’s eerily quiet and empty. Thoughts bounce around and echo each other. Leave me alone leave me alone leave me alone. It’s quiet here in this world, in this head, standing beside this kitchen sink. But these thoughts are all I have. Leave me alone, leave me alone.
